marvel’s nyx

recent months has seen my workload explode somewhat. hence why my online endeavours butternutsquash and kukuburi have gone on brief hiatuses. though the latter is back, butternut will return on september 25th.

the two main projects that kept me chained to the drafting table throughout the month of august were STAR WARS: CLONE WARS for Dark Horse Comics and NYX for Marvel Comics.

for the star wars project i pencilled issue 2 of a new series tied to the movie currently in theatres. the issue i believe is slated to come out in october. nyx sees me coming on board with issue 2 as inker on through issue 6. my first issue just hit the stands earlier this week so i feel it okay to share some pages from it. i’ve included kalman andrasofszky’s pencils beside my inks to show a little bit of the process. on an interesting aside this is the first time i’ve inked anyone aside from myself.

cheers.

and now for something a little different.

last month andy belanger and myself had an art show at local annex lounge insomnia. while andy’s show as taken down due to the monthly turn around of art shows, mine is staying up an extra month due to a cancelation.

the show, titled “andy and ramón take the call“, centres around the theme of phones.

this first piece, PHONESCAPE was a collaborative freeform effort between andy and myself and measures 40″x60″ and it glitters. listed at $600:

the next TOUCH TONE is a concept piece by myself. each wood canvas measures 10″x10″, for a combined area of 40″x55″ taking into account spacing. all the typography is hand painted, no stencils were used. due to the space chains were  used for hanging, though each piece has a individual sawtooth hangers for a clean personal installation.  listed price is $800.

the last piece is a diptych with a nod to hello kitty, with a slightly disturbing bent. it is a mixed media piece of layered gesso, acrylic and ink on a 20″x40″ canvas. listed price is $600.

if you’re in toronto swing by insomnia, enjoy some peculiar art and a fine meal.

and if you’re interested in any of the piece feel free to drop me a line…

cheers.

montrál, je t’aime!

for those of you who are in or near the montréal area i will be appearing at the montréal comicon this weekend. i’ll only have original art on hand (from my dc comics work) but i will also be doing sketch requests. please swing on by and say hello!

the toronto comicon!

for those of in or about the toronto area this weekend sees the return of the annual PARADISE TORONTO COMICON! i, along with rob coughler of bns fame, as well as my fellow tx’ers will be hocking our wars, doing sketches, selling original art and endlessly poking fun at each other.

please stop by if you can!

ADENDUM:

i figured, since emma brought it up, i should perhaps post this ahead of time so that people are aware:

  • headshot in a sketchbook smaller than 5×5: free
  • character sketches on 9×10 bristol, fully inked: $20-$60. (this depends on the complexity of the image. if you want me to draw ironman or complex looking samurai it’s $60, spider-man chillin’ $40, zomgz or reggie from kukuburi it’s $20.)
  • full fledged fancy commissions involving backgrounds or multiple character: $80-$100.

my original comic book art (currently it would be my wildcat/jsa stuff) starts at $100 (though some pages do drop to $75).

i don’t sell any kukuburi pages, and butternut pages vary, though they usually start at $50.

beyond that i am not opposed to haggling and swingin’ deals :)

what’s up

been a bit quiet of late as i’ve been going through a legal battle with my landlord. it’s not pretty and very draining, financially and mentally!

the battle still rages but life has to go on at the same time. to keep myself relatively busy for the next 30 days or so, i’ve signed on to do an issue of the upcoming dark horse series star wars: clone wars, not sure if that’s the official title, but it’s coming out to coincide with the upcoming animated movie.

i’m scheduled to do issue two. issue one is being handled by my fellow tx’er, scott hepburn! it looks like loads of fun, and i get to revisit the good ol’ days of drawin’ me some star wars.

i’ve already pencilled the cover and am waiting on approvals before i head off to inks. so if don’t think i’m allowed to share that just yet. i’ve also started laying out and pencilling the issue. due to the movie tie-in aspect of the book, i am going to be tackling the art in a much more cartoony fashion, akin to my work on kukuburi.

should be fun!

i’ll share what i can, when i can.

till then, below is a digital doodle of an alien species appearing in the book. they’ve appeared before in books but never been depicted. so i get to leave my stamp on the star wars universe!

cheers.

Toronto Sequential Arts Symposium

This Saturday June the 14th I will be attending the Toronto Sequential Arts Symposium. This function is being held surrounding the Shuster Awards and Visions of an Icon Exhibit and is being held at the Lillian H. Smith Library Auditorium located at 239 College Street.

Admission is FREE!

I will be set up in the Artist’s Signing Area, where I will be doing sketches. I will also have original artwork (particularly from my recent run on JSA: Classifieds featuring WILDCAT!) on hand as well as BNS and other related swag!

I, along with a few of my fellow TRANSMISSION Xers, will also be doing a panel titled Sequential Art on the Internet: Webcomics. The panel commences at 12 noon.

Now a bit from the official symposium website;

Doors open at 10am. Between 10-5 there will be a series of talks, a signing room and the art exhibit area. Dozens of comics creators will be on hand to meet the fans and talk about their work and the medium! Talks include Comics & Kids, Webcomics, Writing for Comics, Superman at 70, Canadians & Comics and a Spotlight on Guest of Honour Darwyn Cooke (Justice League: The New Frontier).
At 7 the doors reopen for seating and at 8PM it’s the presentation of the 4th Annual Joe Shuster Canadian Comic Book Creator Awards with masters of Ceremony RICK GREEN and ROB SALEM!

welcome

welcome to my new blog/art site. for years i’ve had both a gallery site and a blog which both suffered from serious neglect. the gallery site because it was too time consuming to code and update and the blog because i was just plain lazy.

so this new home offers the galleries that were once on my art site. i will over time create new galleries showcasing newer material, but for now i just wanted to get things off the ground. the blog element will also allow me to keep you fine folks abreast of projects, conventions and so forth.

so kick back and peruse the site at your leisure.

since butternutsquash updates on thursdays (for the most part) and kukuburi on tuesdays i will most likely post to the blog on off days, be it mondays, wednesdays or fridays. so check back in when you can or just sign up to the rss feed…

cheers,

ramón.

where have the days gone?

well it seems 2008 has arrived and i haven’t updated since october of 2007, sad, very sad.

well first off, HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all who might actually still be perusing this blog!

so, what have i been up to? well, it’s been a busy year since the end of last summer’s convention season. first there is the weekly webcomic i do with rob coughler; BUTTERNUTSQUASH, which is thankfully on hiatus wit hsome great guest strips by some of the industries sooper talents! please check it out if you can!

i also launched KUKUBURI my solitary venture into webcomics. we’re just about to hit the halfway mark in the story, so if you haven’t done so yet please give it a read :)

aside from other corporate work (some pinup girls, a children’s storybook) which i’ll share once i can, i’ve also been working on a three issue story for DC’s JSA: CLASSIFIEDS starring WILDCAT! written by a man i’ve been itching to work with for ages (ever since i read HAWAIIAN DICK) the talented B. Clay Moore and coloured by Dave McCaig (of NEXTWAVE and THE OTHER SIDE fame) this comic has been a joy to work on!

the first issue of the arc will be hitting stores on FEBRUARY 27th, so please contact your local comic’s retailer and get them to order you a copy of JSA: CLASSIFIED #35 and make DC happy and myself look good ;)

below is a sneak peek from issue one.

thanks for the support!

cheers,

ramon.
