the toronto comicon!
for those of in or about the toronto area this weekend sees the return of the annual PARADISE TORONTO COMICON! i, along with rob coughler of bns fame, as well as my fellow tx’ers will be hocking our wars, doing sketches, selling original art and endlessly poking fun at each other.
please stop by if you can!
ADENDUM:
i figured, since emma brought it up, i should perhaps post this ahead of time so that people are aware:
- headshot in a sketchbook smaller than 5×5: free
- character sketches on 9×10 bristol, fully inked: $20-$60. (this depends on the complexity of the image. if you want me to draw ironman or complex looking samurai it’s $60, spider-man chillin’ $40, zomgz or reggie from kukuburi it’s $20.)
- full fledged fancy commissions involving backgrounds or multiple character: $80-$100.
my original comic book art (currently it would be my wildcat/jsa stuff) starts at $100 (though some pages do drop to $75).
i don’t sell any kukuburi pages, and butternut pages vary, though they usually start at $50.
beyond that i am not opposed to haggling and swingin’ deals :)

Truly Ramon, you need to show up in San Diego. I will not stalk you, but I’m sure I’ll visit you at least five times in one day. And bring you coffee.

Sorry Rob, you too.

i like coffee, this could be a good incentive.
actually this is the first year i haven’t done the san diego comicon in 5 years. i needed a break. however if things go well, and according to a semblance of my plan, i (and rob - if he can) will be doing numerous shows next year. san diego included.

As a relative newbie to the wonderful world of comicons, what’s the deal with sketches? And what’s the price range for your original art?

hey emma,
the breakdown i usually work with is something like this:
headshot in a sketchbook smaller than 5×5: free
character sketches on 9×10 bristol, fully inked: $20-$60, this depends on the complexity of the character. if you want me to draw ironman or complex looking samurai it’d be $60, spiderman hangin’ around $40, zomgz or reggie from kukuburi it’s $20.
full fledged fancy commissions involving backgrounds or multiple character: $80-$100.
my original comic book art (currently it would be my wildcat/jsa stuff) starts at $100 (though some pages do drop to $75).
i don’t sell any kukuburi pages, and butternut pages vary, though they usually start at $50.
beyond that i am not opposed to haggling and swingin’ deals

Awww, man! I was totally looking forward to owning a sketch of a Kukuburi character!
A break from sunny San Diego, California? Well, I guess it’s another day of work for you. I live here and I know all of the awesome spots- that I could have showed you if you were coming!

i’ll take you up on the tour next year when i’m in town!
i love going to san diego. i usually stay in pacific beach and drive in for the shows. always a great trip - just had to save some money this year…
but like i said. NEXT YEAR!

I’m a poor college student, I completely get the saving money issue. PB is great fun, as are Hillcrest, North Park, and Balboa Park. I’m friends with you on Myspace (because I’m such a stalker like that), so just let me know!
Until then, keep up the amazing job and remember to breathe!

kristen, i just noticed your email address.
as a fellow lover of all that is the rat pack and especially dino, it warms my heart. so if you want a doodle of a kuku-character, just say the word and i’ll send one your way!

Ah, I just realized that I have a bridal shower to go to on Saturday! If I’m gonna miss the Saturday panels, I doubt I’ll come… a poor college student should not spend money on an entry fee to get into a place where she will just end up spending way more money. Oh well. Thanks the info anyway, Ramon!

no problem emma, i know quite well what it can be like.
i wish there were more shows like the bi-annual toronto comic arts festival (which will be back next year) which had free admission.

Oh my god. I hate myself.
I’ve missed you guys in the past?
